Piano-pop innovator Ben Folds surely can't get enough of Australia. Continuing his 20-year love affair with the country, he now returns with New York’s critically acclaimed yMusic, bringing along interpretions of his solo hits, Ben Folds Five anthems, as well as his new collaboration album, So There.
The tour will start in Brisbane, then to Sydney for two back-to-back shows before going to Perth. Melbourne will also see two consecutive shows before the tour finishes in Canberra.
“I’m looking forward to bring our new live show to Australia. For me, returning to Australia is like coming home, where I have deep roots and feel such a strong connection to audiences,” Folds said.
Chaneling his lyrical ingenuity, hooks and harmony to a new suite of ‘chamber rock’ songs, the former Ben Folds Five frontman draws upon yMusic’s singular makeup; a zealous sextet who have performed alongside Beck, Jose Gonzalez, Dirty Projectors and more. Imbuing lead single Phone in a Pool with drunken strings that skew its AM radio heart, Folds has met his musical match with sweeping results.
Returning to the country that celebrated his talent since the beginning, Ben Folds will definitely treat audiences to a career-spanning set that will bear witness to new songs, rearranged classics, and perhaps a little profanity and crowd engagement.
“The most lovable piece of music I’ve ever heard from Ben Folds.” - NPR
“For the new tracks with yMusic, the textures of the ensemble instruments – string trio, flute, clarinet, trumpet – are not ornamentally grafted on the music: they are the music.” - The Guardian
